Germany beat Hong Kong – Germany 24-14 Hong Kong

Germany played the touring Hong Kong in their last game of 2009 winning 24-14 in the Fritz-Grunebaum-Sportpark in Heidelberg on Saturday, a result which means they climb one place to 26th in the latest IRB World Rankings.

The home side had gone into the match sitting seven places above a Hong Kong squad on their first ever tour of Europe, which will also see them take on the Czech Republic on Wednesday and then the Netherlands at the weekend.

Hong Kong are using the tour to expose new players to the international stage and this probably helped the home side to assert authority on the game Germany were on the front foot from the outset of the match and capitalised on some early confusion in the Hong Kong defence to open the scoring when full back Domenick Davies crossed for the first try in the seventh minute. The visitors then missed a penalty and Germany were soon on the attack again as fly half Kieron Davies kicked two penalties to take Germany out to 11-0 and things then got worse for Hong Kong when another good break from impressive number 8 Alexander Pipa set up a try for wing Benjamin Simm with only 24 minutes on the clock. Hong Kong improved their defence for the rest of the half to keep the score at 16-0 at the interval.

The second half and Hong Kong started to get into the game and this pressure on the Germany defence led to a penalty try, which wing Adam Raby converted to finally get Hong Kong on the scoreboard before coach Dai Rees began to ring the changes, handing a number of players their international débuts.

Perhaps these changes disrupted Hong Kong as Pipa capped his fine performance with a individual try, picking the ball up from the base of a German scrum on Hong Kong’s 22-metre line to charge through the defence to score the home side’s third try.

Davies kicked his third penalty of the match to make it 24-7 with six minutes remaining, but there was still time for Hong Kong to claim a consolation try when quick ball and a well-timed run from flanker Nick Hewson gave him a try on his test début. Giving us the final score of:

Germany 24-14 Hong Kong
