Hamilton

Hamilton is situated in the North Island about an hours drive south of Auckland and is the centre of the Waikato Region, one of New Zealands richest agricultural regions. The city is built around the beautiful Waikato river, which was once Hamiltons only transport and communications link. Now the main highway passes through the city linking the whole of New Zealand.

Hamilton grew up around the Waikato River, the longest in New Zealand and whose name translates as flowing water. Hamilton has long been a farming city and has now developed into an industrial, financial and educational centre. There are abundant parks and walkways, especially along the river and beside the lake where you can take a paddleboat cruise. The Hamilton Gardens has a range of theme gardens. Cruises and jet boat rides operate on the river. The city is centred around Garden Place, with its many shops and cafés. Agricultural research is carried out in the city and at nearby Whatawhata. The National Fieldays are held at Mystery Creek annually and attracts huge numbers of farmers and visitors from New Zealand and overseas. Enjoy unlimited freedom and the unique landscape of New Zealand by taking a hot-air balloon trip. Confectionary is popular in Hamilton with at least two confectionary factories with tours. There are two water theme parks in the area, one featuring hot springs. Relax and experience fine dining in great restaurants.

Hamilton is full of wonderful things to see and do, with something for everyone. If its not there, you wont have to travel far to find it. As you can always find thrills of every kind nearby, from bungy jumping and skydiving to jet boating and white-water rafting. The Waikato provides fast flowing water all year round.
