In misty conditions at Croke Park, both sides were intent on playing running rugby, but still only produced one try in a tight encounter. Ireland took an early lead through a Sexton penalty but South Africa replied with a Schalk Burger try converted by Morne Steyn who also slotted a drop goal to put South Africa in leading 6-10 at half time.

The second half and it was a tight affair which was ruled by the accurate boot of Sexton with 3 further goals whilst Steyn had an off day for his high standards. This saw Ireland home after some frenetic defence with the final score of:
