Spin It Wide Catchphrase in the South island for 2011

Spin It Wide is the catchphrase being spread throughout the Southern region (Otago, Queenstown and Southland), encouraging the local community to get involved in preparations to host Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011).

Key regional stakeholders met in Dunedin to discuss a range of plans to capitalise on RWC 2011. Attendees included over 40 representatives from local authorities, provincial Rugby Unions, regional tourism organisations and hospitality, transportation and service industries.

A welcome given by Dunedin City Council Chief Executive, Jim Harland, highlighted the legacy that would be left through the development of the new Dunedin Stadium and the strengthening of regional relationships.

Richard Reid, of the Otago Rugby Football Union, used the recent sell-out international tests held at Carisbrook as an example of the effectiveness of adopting a regional approach.

In 2008, the region put forward a collaborative front in their bid to host RWC 2011 matches which resulted in three matches awarded to Dunedin and two to Invercargill.

Southern Region Spokesperson Stuart Heal, said that an ongoing coordinated approach is needed to encourage RWC 2011 visitors to travel throughout the region, ensuring a collaborative calendar of events and activities for visitors to make the most of their time down South.

With England, Ireland, Italy and Scotland all scheduled to play matches in the region, Northern Hemisphere supporters could be in the South Island for up to three weeks.

The region has also banded together in their promotion of RWC 2011, developing a marketing campaign called Spin It Wide which puts out a call to arms for all Southerners to get behind the Tournament.

The short film, which features prominent local personalities, icons, landmarks and landscapes is a great demonstration of what is going on around the region as they prepare to host RWC 2011.
