Wales slipped off the pace having led 16-3 in the first half through Two Stephen Jones penalties and a James Hook drop-goal before centre Hook intercepted a loose John Smit pass. The Springboks closed the gap thanks to the boot of Pienaar and a late try to Odwa Ndungane taking us in at 16-14 half-time.
Wales needed to score first in the second period but the Boks had build a head of steam and powered away with scores by Dewald Potgieter and Juan de Jongh to put the Boks out to what seemed and unassailable lead. However Wales were not done and late scores by Tom Prydie and Alun Wyn Jones gave them hope. But it was a step to far and South Africa hung on for a final score of:
