Whangarei

Whangarei is the northern most location for games in the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The city of Whangarei is also the northern most city in New Zealand and the regional capital of Northland Region. For the fans travelling here there is a lot within easy reach of the area, including fishing, sailing, diving, hiking and biking.

The city population was said to be 51,100 at the June 2008 estimate, up from 47,400 in 2001. The area has a subtropical climate and very few frosts. Summers rarely exceed 30°C, and there is plentiful rainfall, spread relatively evenly over the year. The Whangarei urban area includes the suburbs of Kamo, Tikipunga, Otangarei, Mairtown, Riverside, Sherwood Rise, Onerahi, Morningside, Raumanga, Maunu, Horahora, Woodville, Kensington and Whau Valley.

Whangarei could also be said to be the gateway to the Bay of Islands, one of the most popular tourist destination in the North Island. The Bay of Islands is an area in the Northland region of the North Island of New Zealand. Located 60 km north-west of Whangarei, it is close to the northern tip of the country and the main town is Russell. It is also the home of the treaty between Britain and the Maori, The treaty of Waitangi.

Whangarei boasts an aquatic playground of 100 beaches, pristine harbours and off-shore islands. Enjoy the world’s best sub tropical diving, stunning walkways, or wander among an impressive array of galleries and cafes where international yachts moor near the centre of town.
